Kildare County Archives & Local Studies opens at new location (press release)

23rd May 2024: Kildare County Archives and Local Studies will open to the public today, Thursday 23rd May at its new location at Harbour View, Naas, Co. Kildare, W91 A997.  The building at The Harbour now houses a large amount of the county’s historical archival material, as well as its extensive Local Studies collections including Special Collections. It has a large Reading Room, along with a microfilm/public access PCs area. Researchers will be able to avail of assistance with their local history or genealogical research from our experienced staff.

Kildare County Archives holds the records of local government, along with some private papers and manuscript material relating to County Kildare. It provides a service both to the public and to Kildare County Council staff and elected members. It is open to researchers on Thursdays and Fridays, 10.00 to 13.00 and 14.00 to 17.00 by prior appointment.

Access to digitised archival collections or parts of collections including the Grand Jury, the Poor Law Unions of  Athy and Naas, Kildare County Council Minutes, Naas Urban District Council Minutes and Burial Grounds is via https://kildarecoco.ie/library/KildareCountyArchivesandLocalStudies/Archives/OnlineArchives/

Kildare Local Studies holds an extensive collection of books, periodicals, maps, photographs and newspapers relating to the history and heritage of County Kildare. It also has a range of material on Irish history, heritage and archaeology. It is open to researchers from Wednesday-Saturday, 10.00 to 13.00 and 14.00 to 17.00 by prior appointment.

Access will be provided to subscription services such as the Irish Newspaper Archive (currently free to access in all branch libraries in County Kildare) and FindMyPast (also free to access in any full-time Kildare branch library). Royal Ascot Trials Day 2024 – FREE ENTRY FOR OUR CENTENARY CELEBRATION

Sunday 19th May

The Royal Ascot Trials Day at Naas Racecourse is one of the flagship meetings in the Irish and Naas Racing calendar with over €300,000 in prize money, especially for those preparing for Royal Ascot glory.

This year everyone is invited to come racing for FREE and join in the festivities at a special Centenary Raceday as we commemorate Naas Racecourse’s 100 years of racing heritage.

Royal Ascot Trials Day is Naas Racecourse’s pinnacle flat card of the season, boasting two Group Three races, the Goffs Lacken Stakes (Group 3) and the Coolmore Irish EBF Fillies Sprint Stakes (Group 3). There are also competitive Listed races with the Owenstown Stud Stakes and Sole Power Sprint Stakes.

Lots of action on track with Ascot Trials

To honour the racetrack’s illustrious past, amateur drama groups from around the country will be in attendance on the day and stepping back in time to embrace the glamour of the 1920s by showcasing vintage attire reminiscent of the era. Racegoers are encouraged to do the same. The best 1920s inspired outfit on the day will be treated to a VIP Day at Naas races along with an overnight stay and dinner at Lawlor’s of Naas Hotel.

Along with an eight-race card, attendees will be treated to an array of entertainment on the day, including live music, kids’ entertainment, sizzling BBQ’s and discounted hospitality packages.

We are delighted to welcome Jam Music Company back to the Moat Theatre for their Summer Student Showcase.
Join them for an evening of wonderful music that promises to have something for everyone. From pop and rock to jazz and classical there will be something for anyone to enjoy.
They will have a series of solo student performances followed by a selection of student bands performing short sets honouring the music of Tina Turner and Fleetwood Mac. They can’t wait to celebrate all the hard work their students have put in during the year and for them to have this incredible performance opportunity in their local theatre.

Biodiversity Week Kildare Event Guide 2024

Last year I missed the little biodiversity event guide  published by the Local Authority Biodiversity Officer detailing local events and so missed some of them. The book is now available in the Library (in Naas) and if you follow the link you will find venues, times and booking details.
