Open Day on Dun Ailinne

From Mary Kennedy (Kilcullen Diary Facebook and Journal)

The annual Open Day on Dun Ailinne organised by the archaeologists currently conducting their summer ‘dig’ at the site will be held on Sunday 7 July, writes Brian Byrne. The event will run from 1pm-4pm.

Under the supervision of Dr Susan Johnston of the Anthropology Department at George Washington University, and Dr Suzanne Garrett, a group of archaeology students have been on the site, which is on private land owned by the Thompson family, for the last two weeks. Dr Johnston has been undertaking investigations on Dún Ailinne since 2002. Prior to that, as a graduate student with the late Professor Bernard Wailes, she worked in the late 1980s with material from Dún Ailinne gathered by him in his own excavations on the site between 1968-1975, and she is the co-author with him of the final report on his investigations. The excavations undertaken for a month each year provide students from the US with a unique field experience of ancient European archaeological investigation, facilitated by the Black Friary Archaeological School in Co Meath.
The Open Day will include tours conducted by Dr Johnston at 1.30pm and 3pm. An entrance fee of €5 will go to the Jack and Jill Foundation.
Drs Johnston and Garrett’s work on the Kilcullen site through the years has been undertaken with associate Professor Pam Crabtree and has revealed the existence of a substantially more complex set of structure remains than had previously been known.
Dún Ailinne has been put on the Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage classification, as part of the Royal Sites of Ireland application which includes Hill of Uisneach, County Westmeath; Rock of Cashel, County Tipperary; Rathcroghan, County Roscommon; and Tara, County Meath.
NOTE: As Dún Ailinne is on a private working farm, it is not open to the public at any other time apart from the annual Open Day.

July Flat Walk TUESDAY 2nd JULY REMINDER

From Maura:
Free Walking Images, Download Free Walking Images png images, Free ClipArts on Clipart Library
Having looked at various weather sites, Tuesday looks the most promising for our walk in Laytown.
Train leaving Connolly at 10:30, destination Drogheda/Dundalk;
Arriving  Laytown just before 11:30.
So we’ll aim to meet 11:30(ish) in Laytown. There is a large car park just as you walk from the station to the village; we can meet anyone not on the train there.
ONLY CONTACT IF YOU PLAN TO BE THERE PLEASE!
(Say nothing if you can’t make it; it only confuses things.)
Gourmet Coffee
There is a lovely restaurant Relish, in Bettystown where we can have lunch. I’ll need to have numbers to warn them that we’re coming as it’s very popular.
The walk on the beach from Laytown to Bettystown, and back to Bettystown on a little country road should take approximately 1.5/1.75 hrs. We will then have lunch. The walk back on the beach from Bettystown to Laytown will probably take about 40 mins.
Trains back to Dublin are: 15:56; 16:08; 16:34; 17:06 etc.

Walking Group JULY WALK

Here’s some news from Maura McAuliff:
To give you lots of notice, our next walk will be a beach walk, Laytown to Mornington. I’m hoping it will happen the first week of July but it is totally weather dependent.
I’m available Monday 1st, Tuesday 2nd, Friday 5th and Saturday 6th. I’ll be watching the forecast carefully and hope to give you a few days notice.
The plan is to take public transport if possible – get to Connolly station and take the train from there. It’s possible to drive (about an hour from here (Kill/Naas)) but parking on weekdays is tight. Anyway we should be using public transport where it’s available. It’s a lovely easy beach walk with the return journey on a quiet county road total distance about 10.8km.
GOOD WALKING SHOES NEEDED!
So keep an eye on messages nearer the time.
ALSO A REPORT FROM STEPHANIE BERGIN (official reporter, I believe) ON JUNE WALK- Thanks Stephanie – looking forward to your JULY WALK NEWS

Retired  Teachers’ Walk from Avon Rí to Russborough House and Parklands

Stephanie Bergin

On Friday 7th June, twelve enthusiastic walkers assembled in the carpark at Avon Rí Activity Centre before setting out on The Blessington Greenway on route to Russborough House. The weather was pleasant and ideal for walking as a gentle breeze helped to keep us cool and comfortable.  Maura , the highly organised co-ordinator of the walking group, addressed the walkers and kindly  introduced me, as I was on my inaugural walk , only recently retired. A wonderful day unfolded as there was banter, craic among all the walkers as we ambled along leafy lanes and observed the magnificent views of the Blessington Lakes. The ruins of The Burgage Castle Keep peered out from behind the trees and the colourful foliage greatly enhanced our walking experience.

After enjoying this scenic walk, we quickened the pace as we entered the grounds of Russborough and proceeded up the avenue to the restaurant where a delicious lunch was enjoyed by all and certainly restored all our  energies expended on the outward walk. After some lively conversations during our lunch, we were revived and keen  and ready to set out on the homeward leg of the walk. The familiar  paths already taken that morning seemed all the shorter on the return journey and the chats and conversations among the group diverted our attention from any signs of tiredness after a steady pace transported us back to Avon Rí.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience with the group, an excellent choice of walk, and look forward to the next outing. As I dust down the walking boots and recall the interesting conversations and general ‘ Craic agus Spórt’, I feel a true  true sense of ‘ Joie de Vivre’ ! A great day was had by all!

JULY QUIZ

Liz Butler will organise a QUIZ to raise funds for UNICEF or MSF who are working with families in Gaza.

McCormacks, Naas is the suggested venue on 3rd July

Tables of 4 @ €40 per table with a raffle.

Liz assures me it won’t be MASTERMIND but a good way to tax our grey matter and encourage us to focus on current affairs. It’ll also be a good chance to meet up and chat!
